American Honda is putting loyalists in a difficult spot these days:
-Dramatic increase in OEM part prices for Golden Era Honda's (and Acura's)
-Dramatic reduction in available OEM part availability, re: discontinuing parts daily
-Limited new vehicle offerings for loyalists
-Pushing new buyers away via dealer markups
My high mileage 1994 Civic coupe had the AC system replaced summer 2018 because there were no OEM compressor and ancillary parts available according to the dealer. The dealer installed an aftermarket AC system. The belt slipped off the pulley on the way to Expo 18 so I had no AC to Thunderhill and back to SoCal. Dealer replaced the belt. Thought it was fine but all the coolant leaked out by the end of 2019. Times are tight so I'm holding off on getting the AC fixed.
That's an awful story. That pained me to read. :(
Was the compressor aftermarket or somehow a kit for a car that never had ac? The belt is likely improper tensioning on installation and the leak may be from a condenser that finally grew a hole from years of rocks hitting its fins and tubes. AC systems are pretty easy, just expensive to diagnose and expensive to replace parts. If you were close, I'd offer to take a look.

The lack of parts kill it for me. I don't even mind parts being expensive. It makes maintenance more trouble that it may be worth and takes away from enjoyment when the car is down while searching for unobtainium, a crappy substitute or i know what I have.

The compressor failed. I took it to the nearest Honda dealer and was told the next day that there are no more factory parts available and that they will use aftermarket parts to fix the AC. I'm not an expert so I don't know which parts used were aftermarket. I just paid and took the car back and enjoyed the AC from July 2018 to September 2018 when the belt came off on my way to helping Yoshi get to Thunderhill for Expo 2018 West. The belt was replaced and all was fine until a trip from SoCal to Phoenix, AZ in August 2019. White powder/smoke would occasionally come out the vents. Not sure if that was coolant or condensed vapor. It was in the 110s in Arizona so I'm not sure if that was a factor with the car sitting all day in that heat.

By January 2020 I noticed that I wouldn't feel the car lurch when the AC was turned on and that it took a long time to defrost the interior windshield. I drove out to Chuckwalla in February 2020 for a NASA event and the weather was hot and that's the first time I noticed it wasn't blowing cold.

Here's the compressor failing. Lots of UV dye in the lower engine bay when using a black light.

The video was it actually failing? My guess is the Honda dealer used aftermarket stuff. Is a nippon denso reman unit available for that car ? That is the route I would go . Acura did a tsx rack by me using aftermarket rack . Thing ended up there for two weeks and a rental for the customer. First didn’t fit and second leaked. They probably paid for the labor with the loaner when the first didn’t work. I also had vapor in Phoenix in the car on a wet humid day. The ac line leaked enough the next day to tell me I had a leak . I have never seen that before.

Wild! One can assume a similar experience in the US, sadly. I fear many speculators will buy and park, similar to the M2 Competition release.

I heard the US does not have an online purchase system, you have to go through dealers.

I drove my '17 CTR up to the dealership I bought it from to show it off a bit to Paul the salesman/manager(s), and ended up putting a deposit down on a 2021 CTR (basically I have first refusal of their first/next 2021 CTR).

Supposedly their working on getting me a yellow one. :drink:
(both price and availability unknown, but i did essentially agree to a nominal mark-up of 2-3$K).
