I buy my OEM parts from from Cris at IRUNOEM. They’ve sponsored Type R Expo for years, Cris owns a ‘97 Type R, and he always packs the parts well. I bought a new OEM bumper from him lasts fall as I prepared for paint.

I put the passenger manual window in. I can confirm, that there is no difference between R & L? I was only able to get two Right hand window regulators.

Here is the 86-89 teg with the smaller arm swapped. They work so much better than my previous Frankenstein setup.



Also got the car on the lift and starting do a full tear down for paint prep.





Underbody is in great shape, just some minor surface rust.

How is your steering rack? This could be a perfect timing to rebuild while the swap is out.

The rack seems fine I suppose? When is the typical rebuild cycle for these? I pulled the power steering out and looped the lines pretty early in the cars life, maybe around 50k. The car has 120k on it right now.

Excellent question that I don't know the answer too. I imagine it could depend on roads, hwy vs. city ratios, etc. I don't have any issues atm, but I'm approaching 150k on my unit, so I am going proactive (per usual $$$.)

I dropped the block/head/pistons/crank off to the machine shop last week.

They will just check everything over, bore the cylinder, make sure both deck surfaces are flat etc. Just basic stuff before I assemble.

The car is almost stripped all the way, but getting someone to paint this looks like it might be a difficult. One shop quoted me 10-12k. I'd like to keep this under 5k.

I did one of the rattlecan paint matches a long time ago in the engine bay and overtime it turned into complete dog shit. So I've been trying to get all these material removed to make the paint easier.

There isn't too much left to remove, some moldings, mirrors, carpet, brake booster and clutch master cylinder. I think I will rent a hot pressure washer and give it a nice cleaning.

Any thoughts on the rear bumper support that is rusting out. Should I just ditch it, get it a new one? Sand blast it and rattle can pain.

I share your paint cost concerns. Of the paint shops that have returned my phone call, one quoted $3k to paint two bumpers and the hood.

Are you open to none-OEM? I would consider powdercoating finding a CA/FL replacement, or stripping and coasting with POR15.

Paint is such a pain to deal with. I did an engine bay rattle can job years ago and the entire bay cracked and spider webbed after a few years. Was such a pain to sand out (I actually sand blasted some of the nooks where it was hard to sand).

Getting paint done for under $5k is going to be pretty difficult. I have almost $3k in materials alone and decided to paint my car myself. For my budget, I decided I was too picky to pay someone for a less than perfect job. And there was no way I was going to fork over the money certain shops wanted for a complete paint job.

This is good info. What is the parts expense? The paint itself?

I guess I need to raise my budget a little bit. I'm not looking for show car quality, as I still won't be running any interior etc. But I would at least like the car to look halfway decent.

The labor seems like the biggest cost and also being at the mercy at someone doing the work. I can trust myself to assemble a motor, but doing anything body and paint, I don't think I could do it and be happy with the result
