Need help to resolve wheel hop issue

Post by 2020 type R » Mon Feb 22, 2021 2:36 pm

When taking off even a little bit aggressively, front tires jumping up and down, I am not dropping /sidestepping clutch, just a good amount of gas. I am sure I am gonna break a driveline part. Anything gonna fix this that any of you have installed ?

Based on your screenname, you have a new CTR? If its going by my experience from driving a fwd turbo GTI and a few other modern fwd turboc ars what kind of tires are you using? The original factory tires or another set?

And not sure if the CTR forums have mentioned it, but have people swapped to stiffer motor mounts to solve wheel hop? That was one of the things many VW people were doing to mitigate the wheel hop.

I think it is something to live with on a fwd turbo car with the powerband more down low. Hopefully others can chime in.

Thanks, Andrew. Yes, stock Continental sport contact 6. I did read about stiffer motor mount bushings. Since this is an easy and cheap project it might be worth a try.

I'm curious on learning more about this scenario and your use cases, ie spirited street driving, AutoX, HPDE's, etc. Your use cases paired with affinity or anti-affinity of sacrificing comfort for performance may guide our recommendations as well.

The condition: when starting off from a stop in first gear letting off the clutch gently but then hammering it .

So under launch conditions, thank you.

What is your appetite for performance mods that decrease daily driving ride comfort?

Do you experience this on regular surface roads or track only? From my experience I can perfect a street launch on a few tries, with a track it varies every time. I never get wheel hop on the street , on a track I expect it . I also don’t have a ctr and can’t get wheel hop having the clutch up either.

The one day I decided to drive on a prepped drag strip surface I did on my Integra  But I've always had better luck consistently launching n/a 4 cylinders...

OP, Have you also tried slipping the clutch more while you launch it? And what RPM do you launch from? It might be smoother if you can launch at a lower RPM like 3k or so too
