Suspension tuning - dampers, spring rates, etc.
Re: Suspension tuning - dampers, spring rates, etc.
Anyone try out the type r specific Bilstein B8 shocks?
Re: Suspension tuning - dampers, spring rates, etc.
I still have them on my car, are you planning on using them with stock springs?

What are your thoughts? I will be using them with h&r race springs
It's just a daily driver. I am thinking about pairing them with the h&r race springs itr spec. I put maybe 3500-4000 k on the car yearly with one track day.

I liked them with the Original ITR springs, am fine with the GC springs I have of F440/R400.Adidas wrote: ↑Fri Jul 22, 2022 8:05 pmWhat are your thoughts? I will be using them with h&r race springs

But I do feel some of that bilstein hard rebound on harsh bumps that seems to be a common complaint for them which do feel more magnified with the stiffer spring rates. I think I am close to that limit of the shock...
I don't really daily my car much, but I can tolerate it. I have around 35k miles on my Bilsteins so I do think I want to eventually revalve them though.
Based on what I read the H&R race I think are similar rates to what I have Just not sure how much it will lower your ITR vs going the coilover sleeve route and having the height adjustability with similar spring rates.

So I decided to go with the regular integra tein stech springs. Good drop not with excellent ground clearance. The bilstein b8s are such a nice combination with these springs (6k front 5k rear). Will be going with a larger rear sway bar now in the near future.
Re: Suspension tuning - dampers, spring rates, etc.
Popping into this thread to say thanks for the good info. I'm planning out my full suspension overhaul and think I am going to run Koni Yellows with factory springs. I run them on my Mustang and just recently converted them to coilovers (think same as the GCs for Hondas). The coilovers that came on my car are from SERGEANT Japan and are well past their prime. It's a shame because they were ~$1500 back when they were new in the late 90s/early 00s. I'd really like to spring for some coilovers but would rather put the extra $$$ into other areas of the car.
I was going to share a screenshot of my Amayama cart filled with suspension bushings but alas, that is on my work computer. Going to spring for a Mugen engine mount set, Hardrace OEM front UCA and RLCA, and all OEM Honda for every other bushing. Stock struts(?) will receive new mounting rubber and bumpstops. This gives me an excuse to pull everything off the car and treat any rust/crust. Maybe the suspension arms will receive a nice trip to the parts blaster.
I'm going to grab Sankei 555 ball joints as I like the quality and price. OEM tie rods are made of unobtainium so I will probably end up with Sankei 555 outers and some sort of OEM-type inner, maybe Hardrace? If anything I just said sounds stupid, please let me know so I save myself some hassle.

Koni yellows are a great choice, and for a few reasons, they will grow with you (adaptable) and can easily be rebuilt- where as those Sergeant's, like many others MFG in Taiwan/Japan/China, (Tein, etc.), cannot be rebuilt- only replaced. If the stock springs no long suit your needs, you can send the Koni's to be revalved to match a stiffer spring, or just add in Ground Control sleeves + Eibach springs, etc., to match your height and ratios of choice.
I wasn't impressed with my Hard Race Front LCA's. I still have them somewhere if interested. I first opted for Kingpin Machine FLCA's with OEM Honda Performance Development rubber bushings and then purchased Kingpin Machine sphericals later, but didn't get a chance to install. Rear LCA's we are all SOL but I've seen Kingpin Machine do custom work for Function7's, etc.
My Honed Development roll center kit (front and rear) was stolen with the car, but if lowered, I would consider at least the fronts.

Re: Suspension tuning - dampers, spring rates, etc.
Luke,
I ended up purchasing a set of Koni Yellows for the car. $600 shipped via TireRack. Believe it or not, Sergeant offered to rebuild the old coilovers for ~$600 as well. Didn't want to deal with shipping to and from Japan and I also thoroughly enjoy the Konis on my Mustang. I'm glad I'll be able to grow with these. Time to pick up the rest of the bushings and new bumpstops etc. I cannot wait to have an R with a level ride height and a ride that isn't bone-chatteringly stiff.

Bravo for taking note on bump stops, a key element in suspension tuning. I recommend checking these out:4DoorITR wrote: ↑Thu Jan 19, 2023 9:41 pm Luke,

I would really appreciate someone documenting a guide to building a full kit. Ex: Keep OEM suspension as-is and hot swap with a fully built Koni-based system. I'm sure others would appreciate.
