Arm rest badge replacement

Post by Stin1 » Sun Jan 14, 2018 3:10 am

Hi guys and gals. I just bought a new arm rest and badge . Original was faded. I bought the badge because there was a scratch in the plastic that was driving me nuts. So I got part opened up on the new badge and the corners all had star cracking . I have the original badge in . The star is worse in my eyes and the plastic is not sturdy. I will be buying another badge. Any advice opening them with no starring ? Also the thin tape ? I should have lived with the scratch.

Hey there,

I vaguely remember doing this on my car as well -- if I remember right, there is some pretty sticky adhesive tape on the back of the metal badge. I *think* the best way to go about disassembling the new replacement badge is to heat it up with a heatgun (very carefully) and then pry up the edges of the clear plastic with a very tiny flathead screwdriver.

To replace the adhesive tape, I used this stuff: 3M 06385 Nameplate Repair Tape - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007 ... UTF8&psc=1

Hope that helps!

Is the tape thin like the original? Pic seems to appear thicker. I will be buying another badge . When I separated the clear plastic the tabs developed little cracks . Any advice separating the two without cracking it? I bought a new on in 2009 . The part number ends in 003 vs 013. I swear that badge was not assembled but my memory could be off. I don't want to keep buying badges ,

I recently purchased a badge from Acura and to my surprise they are no longer coming with Acura stamped on it. It’s completely blank. They must have changed these at some point.

013 was purchased this year. It included the speed nuts. 003 my lady bought me in 2009 as a gift. The speed nuts were separate. Engraving on these two seem different as well. Different tooling or manufacturing or manufacturer. The original numbered badge has different engraving too. New blank will probably be delivered tomorrow .

Regarding the tape's width & thickness, I can't recall exactly how the original tape looked, however, that 3M tape is 3/16" wide and 0.30" thick (just by Googling), and it seemed to work just fine when I reassembled the armrest badge.
