Some ITR registry stats

Post by Cap » Sat Feb 17, 2018 10:26 pm

I was curious about the number of remaining ITRs in the USA that have clean titles and no modifications. So, I went to the ITR registry and, with some quick calculations, this is what I found.

There are 977 caRs in the registry for the USA in years 1997, 1998, 2000, and 2001.

Of those 977, there are 802 with a clean title. And of the 977, there are only 314 having both a clean title and no mods.

Of course these data are not complete, nor are they likely to be completely accurate. But, my guess is that they are probably approximately correct with respect to proportions. That is, of the remaining operational ITRs in the USA, about 80 percent will have clean titles, and about 30 percent will be clean and unmodified.

To my mind, the big question is this, "of the approximately 4000 ITRs sold in the USA, how many are still operational?" I'm not sure how to get that number.

I don't know how to get the number either. But general consensus seems to be about 50% operational. So maybe 2,000.

Like 10 years ago about 50% were a clean title.

Clean title is rare these days.

01-0629 looks like a golf ball but is a clean title.

The registry doesn’t look like it’s been updated in some years so I’m guessing that at least a few more have fallen since then.

The registry guy updated it when I bought my R 2 years ago. He was very responsive.

Tha term “Clean Title” means nothing. What you want is Vehicle History Report. It is very easy to wash a title from one state to the next. Most states do not acknowledge other states title status. Caveat Emptor

For cars that are 17-20 years old, having 50% still in service would seem reasonable. But, in some categories, like old pickup trucks, there might be a higher percentage. And collectable cars might also be higher.

I followed that link to the 2006 effort to check all the VINs on Carfax. That made me chuckle... Carfax has changed their policies. I purchased an "unlimited" use of Carfax for a month last year, and discovered that they really only give you a full report on about 20 cars. Still, that was a valiant effort. I wonder what they would charge for 4000 VINs? :o

Others on here have mentioned that they get free Carfax reports I believe b/c they know the owner of a dealership etc. So that's one way to go.

This just reminded me to submit to the registry. Let's see if it updates.
