Easy Fixes: Gauge Cluster & Exhaust Rattles

Just wanted to share a couple easy fixes to a couple rattles that developed on my ITR today.

Gauge cluster rattle - First I pulled off the upper clamshell that covers the steering column (no screws just pull up firmly on both left and right to release the clips). Next I removed the plastic cluster surround. Just two screws hold it in place and are under the top section. Remove the screws then pull firmly on the lower section. Up next there are 3 screws that hold the gauge cluster in place. One upper, a left and a right. I found the upper screw holding the cluster was so loose it was about to fall out. Tightened it up and checked the other screws to ensure they were all tight. Fixed




Exhaust rattle on accel and decel above 3000rpm - Jacked up the car and secured on jack stands. Tapped all along the stock exhaust and noticed a nice twang / metal vibration from the catalytic converter shield. Removed the four 10mm bolts and cut the shield for the o2 sensor. Test drove the car under various loads and conditions. Fixed





Have you guys run into any other easy fixes to common ITR problems?

I had exhaust rattle too, and turned out it was loose bolts on lower heat shield of header.

Are you able to take pictures of the items? We could turn this into two separate DIY's for to enable search hits for future requests.

Added a few pictures. I didn't take pictures of the cluster but added a few pics from Honda tech to help. Pics of my cat heat shield aren't the best but they will do lol

A note I did have another jack stand in place off to the left out of the picture.

Part of it was fixed when I bought the correct hangers for my car. I think my high flow cat with welded on flanges to the usdm bpipe and jdm 4-1 header might be contributing.

Yep, in my previous gs-r I had similar rattle from the cat heat shield because it was rusty and bent up toward the shift linkage area. I just bent it back and voila.

My 98 R header developed a crack on one of the securing bolts for the lower heat shield. Had no rust. I had to remove it. I still don't know why it cracked. Rattled like no other.

I fixed another rattle last week. The plastic cover mounted on the hatch covering the wiper motor developed a loud rattle over bumps.

My culprit was the long piece that is pressed in with clips. It is at the bottom of the hatch glass. Pull firmly to remove the plastic trim. I wrapped electrical tape on each clip and reinstalled. No more hatch rattle!

Mine has had a squeaking sound behind the dash. So annoying but don't want to take the dash out to find the root cause.
