Restoring #97-00012
Re: Restoring #97-00012
Question as well on the zinc bolts. The following pic was the 43k eBay 97 unicorn. I noticed the front bumper has cadmium plated bolts. The rest are all zinc. Is that accurate? The car and driver 97 article does not show those bolts. My I love type R Japanese magazine also has cadmium plated bolts on the bumper on jdm fronts. Rest appear to be zinc.

Re: Restoring #97-00012
Luckily I have someone local to me (almost right down the street) who is chemical bathing them and returning them to me. He said I need to clean/wire brush them all and remove any final dirt/rust.
Then when I bring back, he can gold zinc them in a day or two for $85. Well well worth it IMO.
I will take pics along the way as it goes through the process.

The unicorn ‘97 appears to have had a few fasteners replaced. Going across the upper radiator support, at the far end is a bracket for the bumper cover, which has a black zinc bolt. Each headlight has two plain finish silver bolts, and the radiator has a bracket on either end with a plain silver bolt. The condenser bracket bolts and the A/C suction hose bolts & bracket should be yellow zinc. The ground cables are... unsure, some kind of dull copper looking finish, and the bumper stiffener bar has those black zinc (?) screws.Stin1 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 06, 2018 3:37 pm Question as well on the zinc bolts. I don’t think the silver bolts are cadmium plated. From research I did back when wanting to get some stuff plated, use of cadmium plating, which used to be found on brake boosters and carburetors, stopped many years ago because it is toxic. Zinc plating is used instead these days. It can be silver, yellow (golden, which looks like cadmium plating did), or black.
In most instances I’ve seen lately, fasteners that were originally yellow zinc will now come from Honda in silver zinc, as that photo of the ‘97 can attest. The brake calipers, for example, come with silver zinc plating now and not the pretty goooooooold.

Good stuff man. It's really starting to come together. I love all the resto work on the bumper beams, bolts, column and other bracketry. So tidy

Re: Restoring #97-00012
So finally, FINALLY got all of these bolts cleaned up and wire wheeled down. Dropped them off at the plating spot early this morning and he said should have back for Wednesday, no problem.
Total was about 16-18 hours of wire wheeling EVERY. SINGLE. NUT. AND BOLT. My buddy John and I clamped two 8" bench grinders down on the table and just went crazy. FOR HOURS.
Im really starting to think we've lost our marbles!!
Here is a before shot after they had been chemical bathed for 4 days!!
And here they are when I dropped them off this morning. All clean and shiney and ready for the gold stuff!!
