Several items to consider here.

1.) How many were produced?
AndyT wrote: USDM Production Numbers
ITR
1997: 320
1998: 1002
2000: 1355
2001: 1173

CTR:
.....
More in this thread here.
2.) How many remain?

3.) Condition of those that remain?

4.) Audit/paper trail
Ex: Verified history of mileage, condition, etc.
Risk: With speculation comes those wishing to "cash in" via altering mileage, condition, etc.

Ultimately, what do you want?

-Car you can enjoy
-Collector/speculation
-97-specific or 98-specific

thanks for the reply. I'm looking for something all original. I'm probable going to drive it couple times a month or so. base on the numbers produced for 1997 it's probably impossible to find a good one. well, their all pretty hard to find now a days specially a good clean one with good history.

I would look for the best condition one you can find regardless of year. Don't ignore ones with modifications as most can be reversed.

I feel like restoring a 97 would be more difficult than a 98 - 01 because the 97 has more discontinued parts. I like owning a 2001 because I can still get floor mats new

It really depends on what color you want: white, yellow, or black.

Budget should also be taken into account with the current climate.

To answer the thread title simply, it depends who you ask.

I personally prefer the styling of the 98+ over the 97.

All things equal I could see a '97 being more desirable but that doesn't always translate to more money.
