...A buddy of mine recommended the RS4 as well. Comparably priced to the 71R and he swears by them. The only downside is they dont come in 205/50, they only come in 195 or 225. Supposedly they arent as wide as most 225 so they will work ok on a 7" wheel, he doesnt think they feel mushy.

Thoughts?

I can only speak for RS4's on 15x8''. They felt inline with RS3's, but better in the wet with the new tread design. I've mostly ran RS4's in rain or early mornings in fog, rarely at speed.

How are the RS4s in the cold? I am probably going to run them as my next tire for the s2000. I've run some old RS3s on track and loved them (even for being 4 years old) My only problem with the RS3 was they were like ice when cold. Once on the way to the track, I had a pucker moment getting on an on ramp with the s2000 (40ish degrees out). Wasn't even pushing it, caught me off guard, luckily saved it.

Most Extreme Performance Summer tires won't perform "well" in 40*. It's common to be cold (40-50's) in mornings here, especially with fog. Last spring, I had multiple mornings with dense fog, delaying track time. I sufficiently took it easy to warm my brain/car up for the track these mornings on RS4's and then switched to NT01's once dry.

Everything I've read was the RS4s take time to get heat in them, but they last longer for track events

I have BFG Rival S 1.5 in 205 on 15X8 rims and RS3's in 205 on a 16X7 the Rivals are hands down better. At Waterford Hills I ran a 1:26.4 with the RS3 in the morning then switched to the Rival in the afternoon after lunch and got to a 1:22:7. There was just so much more grip with the Rival and Waterfords track surface was rough (now repaved). This was not my first time at this track.

Were the tires equal in age and wear?

Equal wear and about year difference on build dates. I purchased them just prior to Expo 17, still using them

Isnt The RS4 a new compound compared to the RS3?

Ill likely just stick with the 71R since I thoroughly enjoyed them.

The RS4 is a new compound. On top of that, the RS3 was known for being super-sketchy in the wet and cold. That was fixed a little bit with the RS3v2.

The RS4 is a great go-to option for track use (as is the 615k+). As mentioned, none of these tires are particularly great in cold temps so take some time getting temp into them, start with low pressures, etc.

Not since maybe a year ago? It was the 615 first (and wasn’t particularly good). Then it was the 615k (and it was better). Finally it was the 615k+. I think I posted about the tire previously... I put them on my 996TT almost a year ago and ran them at AMP with good results. Also ran them with Jabaay/Kutil/Taylor on my old EF Sedan at GridLife South and loved bombing around in them. They’re not the absolute fastest tire out there but they’re progressive and fun at the limit. Seems to have good wear too.

Translation?

Some of the “serious business” autocrossers have grabbed their torches and pitchforks... they’re declaring that the 71R/Rival-S are perfectly reasonable as street tires but these are “too far”. I sorta get the objection as the Yok may be better/faster while wearing faster AND costing more. Having said that, if it meets the rule criteria, I don’t see why it would get booted onto the exclusion list for SCCA.

As far as release dates, I’d expect them awfully damn soon. IIRC, there’s a cutoff for SCCA eligibility in the next few months that they’re going to want to meet. If they miss out, the tires won’t be legal until next year. Personally, I’d keep an eye on TR as they’ll be splitting out the new tire into the Extreme Performance category. I’ll also post back here if I see/hear anything.

There are new developments surrounding the availability of the ADVAN A052. Details are still being hammered out, so we can't get too specific yet, but it seems pretty certain the tires will be available with time to spare before the April 30th cutoff. I wonder how 205/50/15's 615k+'s handle a 15x8'' rim?

I ran the original 215's and the 615's when they were the go-to HPDE tire. I tracked on the 615k's once, but I used them mostly as a street tire.
