I'm on another parts hoarding bender, and I'm looking at transmission parts. No major issues currently with my gearbox but one day no doubt.
When people are rebuilding these is it generally the 5 bearings and 3 synchro sets that are replaced? Is the 5/R synchro commonly done? Looking at OEM while it's available but the cost is high. Synchrotech just as good/better? Anything else in there often replaced? I realise it's difficult without having it apart.
I'm naively OEM first in general, but Honda is dramatically discontinuing parts which is shifting me away. I have only ran OEM synchros but I would be curious for those who have successfully run Synchrotech. I have taken a few approaches when rebuilding:
-All at once, synchros, hubs, & sliders for 1-2, 3-4, & 5-R, including OEM bearing refreshes (#981040 in 2007, 97 #00171 in 2013)
-Replacing only the affected synchro or full slider assembly (1-2 slider in #010187 in ~2011)
-Replacing all full slider assembly (#981040 in 2018)
-Replacing needle bearings on LSD to ball bearings
This largely depends on the state of the current transmission. For 97 #00171, I had a 3rd grind and the entire unit had ~130k, so I went proactive and replaced the full sliders and all bearings. For #981040, after ~25k and 10yrs of ~60x track days, I waited a bit too long to replace just the synchros. I didn't have any grinds but the shifts weren't as crisp & clean, so I went with all new slider assemblies. Prior to Honda massively increasing prices, I was very proactive for both longterm reliability and preferred OEM Honda quality.

So hubs and sliders are included in the synchro assembly when ordering? IE number 8 and 20 in the image below? (And the same for 1-2 on the countershaft). I'm learning.
There also seems to be more bearings than I realised, but I would guess they should all be replaced, both needle and ball types?

Honda switched the ITR from needle bearings to ball bearings in 98. When I rebuilt the transmission in 97 #00171 I did a full bearing overhaul and converted to ball bearings. The ball bearings are stronger, easier to clearance, and one shim to rule them all (ie both sides.)

Thanks, so when you upgraded from needle to ball bearings that was aftermarket? The parts diagrams still show needle for 98+ (for JDM, which I have). eg part 16 in the image above.

No, to clarify, I converted my 97's transmission to the newer style OEM 98+ ball bearings.

It appears '97 ITR rear left calipers are discontinued, right rear are still showing available:
'97:
Caliper Body L: 43013-ST3-E50 (discontinued)
Caliper Body R: 43012-ST3-E50
Both sides for '98-01 show available.

I did this a few years ago, but from memory I replaced / upgraded all of the above. The specific needle (older) bearings were on '97 and I believe '98. The newer bearings are stronger and easier to shim. Note, replacing the bearings requires measuring & ordering new shims that meet individual clearance specs.

-Top Needle: 91104-P21-008 No. 18
-Bottom Needle: 91108-P21-008 (x2) No. 19
Countershaft:
-Top Needle 42X47X24: 91105-P21-003

LSD / Clutch Housing:
-Pressed top & seated Ball Bearing 40X80X18/19.5: 91005-P80-E31 (2x) No. 17
-Shim: *Number, varies on install
-Mainshaft Base Needle Bearing 33X60X20: 91101-PG1-008 No. 18
-Countershaft Ball Bearing Ball 28X60X15: 91002-PS1-003 No. 16

I would venture to say 90% or greater of integra parts have been discontinued. Very few desirable parts left. Would be far easier to create a list of available parts vs NLA parts
