I drove a friends CTR. It is fast but it doesn't feel as special as an ITR. I have two young kids but I don't plan on driving them very often (have a CRV). The car just doesn't get me excited.
After owning a 996 TT for a year what are your thoughts on it? I am driving one next Sunday with suspension and bolt on performance mods.

The want for a Porsche is real. I need a garage first.

But what do you think about the maintenance costs?

That would be a floating target:
-Air-cooled
-996/water-cooled
-Under warranty
A garage is years away. I have time to pick and choose.

I'm thinking of a 996TT after the awful experience I had trying to take care of a simple CTR warranty issue with the harness that I've detailed in another thread.
I like the CTR. It's a good car with most modern amenities (I miss having heated/vented seats, Homelink, and collision avoidance) but they are nice to have and not required.
It's an extremely capable DD with 18" wheels. The 20's are not forgiving on rough roads. The turbo lag annoys me (it's not a lot, but it's there) and doesn't come on as quick or strong as the T25 on my 240SX. I'm looking forward to driving a 996TT to compare. The CTR is a deceivingly fast car. There were plenty of times that I looked down at the speedometer and didn't realize how fast I was going...

Sorry, missed there were responses on the thread... derp.
The 996TT is a fun car and, given the rear engine weight bias, feels “special” even at legal speeds. When you lean on it, it feels even more special... it’s just wildly different due to the weight distribution. It’s also a very analog feeling car while newer stuff gets further and further away from the basics of what make a driver’s car enjoyable.

Maintenance on my car has been limited to oil changes only... but I had a ton of preventative stuff done at the time of purchase. Working on it is a bit of a hassle compared to the older Honda stuff but I realize that’s likely the case with almost anything newer. Everything is going to be more expensive to maintain than an ITR due to parts cost and simply the quantities of items needed. An oil change takes almost 10 quarts of synthetic plus 4 crush washers and a filter insert.
Values on these appear to still be moving slowly upward. It’s the one thing with selling that gives me pause; if I sell now, will I be able to buy back in if I want to? Dunno.

The 996TT is a great car but it’s obviously an older car compared to the CTR. It’s got even fewer modern features and, in comparison, has oodles of lag... but that’s sort of what I enjoy when I drive it. It feels like a special car for better and worse. It’s certainly not an ideal commuter car or family hauler (though I’ve used it for both).
Ultimately I think I’m going to sell it but I’m not certain what will replace it. I’ve locked around the possibility of a Model 3 but I’m not positive that it’s the right option either.

What cars are on your short list?

I’m kind of all over the place on replacement options... CTR or maybe an Si. Considered a Model 3 dual motor. Also kicked around the idea of something like an LS 430/460 or maybe a JDM import sedan...
Maybe I’ll take a spin in the 996 tomorrow and see if speaks to me?
