I am guessing an o2 spacer? though the legalities of that probably won't fly if you have a visual inspection

What is a o2 sensor bypass sensor? When I got the car it had that o2 sensor attached to a toda header and a test pipe with a bolt plugging the secondary o2 . I sourced a Oem catalyst and installed the secondary o2 with a nippon unit at the same time. The car had a p0420 I believe with the test pipe.
Yes, journeytyper installed the test pipe, Asahi installed the Toda header.

The secondary O2 will throw a code with a test pipe, so journeytyper installed the bypass. For context, the secondary O2 is essentially just making sure the cat is functioning. Binary example, think of a sensor sending 0 & 1's (repeating) to the ECU when reading for "rich" & "lean." Without a cat, the secondary throws a code, so someone released a bypass sensor to mimic the repeating rich/lean readings to "trick" the ECU when using a test pipe.

Thank you for elaborating. I remember those things and when they were readily available. Then the epa got a bone of it and started charging people. Now you can’t buy them .It certainly wasn’t in the car when I got it . The car had basically all emission components removed and had a cel for every one of the missing components. Definitely had p0420 cat below threshold and then I got slow oxygen response trying to trick it with the spark de fouler. I remember the thread on ht with the guy making the bypass and it had to respond on warm up differently or it would get the slow response code .

I must say , reminiscing about purchasing the car the missing emission components were so satisfying to reinstall. The smell of no catalyst and no evap is disgusting. It would make me sick to start the car. Garage would smell like a lawnmower. If only I could get an evap purge valve to finish the emission system on this car .

Could you get away with a non ITR one until you find another one that works? I understand the authenticity of having an original one, are there any other Hondas that had a similar EVAP pluf to the 98 ITR?

I agree with you on the issues with the smell of no cat and no EVAP as I got really nauseous when I had the EVAP unplugged when I was diagnosing issues on my car.

The 98 itr has a different plug than the other models. Image I documented the difference in this thread with a 98 Usdm , 00-01 Usdm, and the U.K version. They all use the same black plug except the 98 itr. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=927&start=10
Here’s manual.

Here’s the 96-00 civic, ls integra , and crv version.
. The same oblong black plug. I have wanted to create a jumper rather than depin it . The black plug I have had no luck depining the plug. One plug I had I couldn’t remove the blue lock . When it came out I didn’t like it and felt it was damaged. I got another one, the blue connector came out like butter but the pins were still locked in the connector I have them out now but IMO the connector is garbage. I don’t have any problems depinning these on other connections, only this black connector.

I finally made some progress towards one of my goals of reunification of the original engine . If you have been reading this thread you may recall that one or more of the previous owners spun a bearing and tried to rebuild the engine using the same crank resulting in another spun bearing . About a year or two ago dc231 got me another crank . A+ seller. Check out the packaging for shipping.

I finally got my brother to drive down here so I could get it on the engine stand and disassemble it . This was planned for 2020 . Things don’t always go as planned.

Yeah it spun a bearing alright. :lol: . I am not sure if this is the bearing or something the machine shop tried to “ repair “ the crank with . Cylinder one certainly got hot !

Thanks for chiming in . That would be the ammunition guy I haven’t been able to contact I believe ? The bottom end has been sitting for several years. The oil pan had been removed but no other parts except a visual inspection for damage. One thing that struck me as odd was the oil filter was bone dry. I know a spun bearing will result in loss of oil pressure. The oil pump certainly wasn’t replaced. It would be great to hear what happened on initial failure, “repair” , and final failure. The picture with what I am questioning as being the bearing has or had similarities in the material to what we as kids would play with called slap bracelets. When I pulled it apart/ off one half flew 5 feet away and returned to the round shape. I looked for some images on the internet and found nothing like what I found here.
