DIY Vapor Barrier

Honda has discontinued the vapor/moisture barrier so decided to make my own. Fairly easy process

Before:






I found that the easiest way to remove all the gooey mess was to scrape off as much as possible with an old key card/credit card. Then wet down some paper towels with WD-40 and pat the residuals to loosen. Go back over while wiping. Do a final cleaning w/ degreaser or rubbing alcohol.


Cut out a piece of 6mil poly sheeting. 37x18" Tape onto door and trace out the area where the butyl tape will be applied.


Cut about an 1" outside those lines. Apply the butyl tape in the recessed area and press on new vapor barrier. Anywhere a hole needs to be cut, I placed clear tape over the area to reinforce it. Done

What was the temperature? I did mine in 110 + temps, and the humidity was high. The floor was and everything had goo everywhere. Every other 96-01 Honda they are like dried bubble gum.

I think it was low 80's when I did this? Driver's side was worse where the goo had slid down into the door.

You have type r speakers too.

I forgot to include that any holes I made was reinforced with packing tape to try and prevent tearing once it's all put back together.

The speakers have held up nicely over the years Type R in front, Type S for the rears.

Excellent write up Yoshi! This item has been longstanding on my to-do list. I was able to secure OEM vapor guards before they went discontinued, but I wasn't sure on both how to best to remove the goo and what to reseal with. I owe you .

Extra credit for coming up with a suitable replacement for Honda discontinuing this part. The community needs more people like yourself as Honda makes it harder for us to maintain these cars.

The plastic Honda uses to wrap their windshields is similar in material.
