Roll Bar / Roll Cage Options?
Roll Bar / Roll Cage Options?
Hello All,
I recently joined the ITR club and am in the middle of getting my 98 itr put together. I have 2 bucket seats and willan's harnesses to be installed. I want to do it right and was wondering what peoples solutions are for this. I can do a full custom cage but might just start with something bolt in, or weld in half cage? Would like to see some photos if possible. Its not a daily, more of a weekend warrior car.
Ill get a build thread going once I do something more than park it in the garage.

Re: Roll Bar / Roll Cage Options?
Budget and goals will dictate where you go with this. Things to consider:
- HPDE or all-out SCCA/NASA racecar
- Retain interior
- Cost
Shops like King Motorsports can build some very nice custom cages and/or roll bars. Here's an example:

Or, you can go the common and more affordable route that many of us have and pick up an AutoPower Roll bar.

You need to get the Race Roll Bar. The other two options will not pass safety / tech inspection.
You can read the rules for Type R Expo regarding car safety setups here:

Hope that helps!

If you were going for all-out SCCA/NASA, what is recommended then? A full custom cage to be built by a shop?

HPDE, TT, or Wheel to Wheel? Note, a bolt-in rollbar or cage will typically have inferior fitment, safety, and weight, but comes at a lower cost- even cheaper when used. A custom weld-in typically uses higher grade metal (lighter / stronger), better attachment points, and offers better fitment (closer to body), which generally leads to a safer design. The costs go up exponentially for a custom rollbar / cage though and market costs for metal play a factor.

Thanks Luke and Cheez.
I think im gonna look into an autopower bolt in roll bar for now. Not sure a full weld in cage is/will be needed.

We offer Autopower products, send me a email and I can get you pricing: Daniel@essesauto.com
I kinda like the fitment of the Autopower better vs the Kirk cage (which I run).

Re: Roll Bar / Roll Cage Options?
Yes. If you are doing W2W racing, you will want a real cage, not a bolt in. Bolt In's are great for HPDE/weekend track cars but they are not ideal.
I will have a kirk cage for sale soon, but again, I wouldn't suggest it for a race car. I'm just using it in a HPDE car and am replacing it with a custom cage once I get around to dumping the $2k into it.

I have the kirk. I absolutely love it & I feel the quality is better than Autopower in my opinion

Re: Roll Bar / Roll Cage Options?
OP what did you ended up getting? I’m in a similar situation with Buckets in transit right now (Sparco). Haven’t decided on rails yet but would like a low seating position.
What seat/rails are you guys using?
Wanting to do it right but knowing this would snowball I’ve been looking at custom roll bars and also Autopower. Curious to see what you sent with.
Thanks!
