HPDE insurance

Curious what others are doing and what limits you choose.

This is looking like one of my biggest expenses for any track day at roughly $400 an event (policies seem to cover up to 3 day events for roughly the same pricing). This is without time trial coverage, which I should probably add since I’d bet insurance would give issues if lap timers are used even if only for DI purposes, unless time trial coverage is selected.

Initially I used Lockton (for 2 days with Fastlane) this go with Togue2track I chose Hagerty (RLI) since Lockton didn’t seem to list Touge2track as an event host (mandatory field) or provide for input of a write in option.

I’d probably be able to cut this if I opted to lower coverage maximum from $50,000 but I’d like to think at this limit if something did happen it would largely fund a CTR. The way most insurance policies are worded it’s probably unlikely my ITR closing in on 200k would see this sort of payout though so I suspect I’m overpaying without justifiable reason.

Reading the Hagerty/RLI policy you sort of wonder what is covered, maybe only getting hit parked in the paddock. :s

I haven't tracked the ITR in a while but for the ITR at Sonoma I use OpenTrack - https://www.opentrack.com

Easy to sign up, can do it 24 hours before the actual event. I have a friend who's GT4 and CTR were covered in incidents on track with no major issues and he had a Solo in the car for timing purposes.

If you're doing more than 10 events in a year it makes sense to just get the annual policy.

I have previously leveraged Lockton for a few HPDE's. The costs varied based off individual track and value of the vehicle.

Ran a quick quote for Opentrack, roughly the same, $400 for single event (@$50k). Lowering max payout to $35k reduces premium ~$10 to $388.

Hagerty required $100k car value for an annual policy. Looks like open track is more flexible. If you know you’re tracking at least once a month and can pay an annual premium up front it covers a considerable number of tracks and cuts the price about $403 assuming one event a month. Annual saves a bit more dropping to $35k to $4000/yr. If paying monthly though it actually looks more expensive than paying per event, if doing one event per month or less.

I’m hoping to get on track about every other month, maybe 5-6 events this year. It’s seems like I’d probably be better getting coverage per event for now.

A quick note on this, the event usually needs to provide documentation to Lockton, etc. They review it before approving insurance for an attendees. We went through this each year with Expo (including insurance for NSXPO 17 and 18). If you don't see it available on certain insurance companies, that is probably why. You could ask the event organizers to go through the process, but that's also up to them. Organizers usually focus on their liability insurance plus insurance for the track first.
I am happy to see more choices out there but do not have experience with them.

I think it was TurboLS that had a track incident a few years back and has some experience with insurance? It may have been on the old zeroforum though...

I can confirm TurboLS used Lockton Affinity HPDE insurance for that event. His friend wadded the car at VIR and it was stated value claim since the car was a total loss.

A good lesson for anyone co-driving, buy the insurance if driving someone else's car or make sure your friend buys insurance.

You're right. My turbo car was covered during nsxpo 2013 at VIR for 2 drivers at an agreed value of $27500 and the premium was $148.50.

Deductible was $3k and was subtracted from the payout amount if I recall correctly.

The entire process took about 3 weeks from report of the incident to the receipt of funds.

And then I bought the car back afterwards from iaai.
