JDM Length High Flow Cat Options?

Hi All,

Sorry been out of the ITR scene for a minute playing with other cars. My old SMSP jdm length cat seems to have died. Is there anyone making an off the shelf metallic substrate HFC in jdm length?

I searched and all I get are testpipes. I could go the custom route, but before I did that wanted to check if there was something easy.

Thanks,

Ken

I wish I could recall where I saw this but someone else posted a similar question to yours on another forum. Some one posted a Japanese website with several options. I was shocked by the amount of options actually.

Yah most of the Japanese options end up being 500+ dollars which is insanity. At that price I can do a metallic 200 cell high flow custom made for half the price. Was hoping for a USA manufacturer actually so I could just slap it in and be done with it.

Would that be able to pass emissions and turn off cel with o2 Bung attached?

If you are in CA, it's a crap shoot because more techs are looking for EO numbers on the aftermarket cat (and other parts)and matching them to the online database. It may pass visual if your tech is lazy and it depends on the shop. I went the same shop for years without fail until last year when I had a run in with a new tech that insisted I jack up the car on site so he can verify the EO number because my car was too low. I told him to go pound sand and went to another shop that passed me without checking the EO. I actually have a legitimate carb legal cat too, but that jacking up the car part was a bit much for me.

Of course you can always find that one person that knows that one person that can pass you for a price,

It's annoying to have to change my whole jdm exhaust setup back to usdm to pass smog. That's what I did recently, so I'm always looking for easier options. But I did pass it with the comptech header, which is CARB legal.

But mainly I'm looking to be able to get the CEL off with a legit cat, instead of having to do some O2 sensor trickery.

What kind of CARB cat do you have?

Just got my cat from Devon. Quick turnaround and recommend him highly.

I'm in California too. A couple things are important to note.

A) Visual - Your cat has to look stock or have a CARB number to pass smog for most places.

B) OBD Test - I think as of 2017 they no longer use the sniffer or roller test. They just hook up their smog computer to your OBD port and run a diagnostic while the car is on.

Your options with a JDM length header and exhaust passing California emissions would be:

1) Custom HFC with a heatshield - This should in theory pass visual, but I am not sure if these low cell count metallic high performance cats will pass the OBD test. They are meant to flow much more similar to a test pipe so keep that in mind. I'm not sure if it will push past the allowable range.

2) JDM OEM cat - This should also pass visual and would be more likely to pass the emissions test since it is a more restrictive ceramic cat.
