OEM connectors and electrics

Post by aklackner » Wed Dec 02, 2020 9:34 am

This may be well known but was new information to me. I think we’ve seen some questions come up around OEM connectors and terminals so I wanted to post something simple here to help with searches.

While duetsch style connectors are dominant in motorsports/aftermarket wiring now, it seems Honda (and many Japanese OEMs) have heavily used Sumitomo connectors.

Flipping through sources you’ll quickly see options for replacement connector housing, terminals, and seals. Keep in mind you’ll generally need an open barrel crimper for terminals which have 2 tabs to curled into grab wires, and another larger set of tabs that grab wire insulation.

Connector catalogs are still challenging to navigate and many times are wholesale/large volume only.

Things you’ll need to know are number of connector positions(max contacts), if the connector is sealed (generally if it’s in the bay it’s sealed, interior probably not), if the connector has sockets or pins.

One source that appears to be open, but I’ve not had a chance to try yet is, https://www.corsa-technic.com/category. ... gory_id=54 so I guess.. happy hunting!

I’m also seeing some of the connector clips listed at the link above so it may help secure some of the loose connectors after a repaint or wiring project.

Maybe we can start our own catalog here to document specific connectors/terminals as we confirm to make orders easier?

This is a great idea and I agree, will be needed more and more as Honda continues to discontinue parts.

it wont look like it, but this is a great place to buy from:

https://cycleterminal.com/

they generally have the connectors at about half price of racespec or rywire. There is a little work to do to build out a harness worth of plugs, but i used this for a successful k20z3 harness build for my last itr project.

Great resources here. I've dabbled here and there in wiring and connectors (mostly for car audio etc.). And yes it can get confusing if wanting to replace any of those parts, or learning how to install/uninstall the wires in the connectors and all that.
