I saw two examples of 95's imported into Ireland in the early 00's. Both CW. The other thing I noticed looking at original Japanese sale dates was it seems they weren't so concerned about the year. In the sense that a car built in early December could be sold/registered in December. Mine was originally sold Japan in December and all the date codes on interior parts etc are all December too.
Here in Ireland that would never happen. Customers would wait the couple of weeks to get the next "newer" year plate on their car. Though it's prominently displayed as part of the main lettering on our licence plates, so that makes a difference(when it was introduced over the older non date system car sales went up).
I don't know if that has any influence in the US?
I also saw another import with 01 on the plate.

Thank you for chiming in and adding your experiences. This helps solve the riddle.
Often in the US the production date/year may differ from the model year. Manufacturers will release "next year's models" in the fall during the car show circuit.

Ah right. That makes sense in the US context alright. FWIW the two 95's I saw were both the basic option delete models. So no ABS, no Aircon, no radio. I know one of them was crashed and written off, I've no idea where the other one went. Probably rusted away/parted out/scrapped.
