ITR - Tires

Post by typer97-00084 » Wed Jul 31, 2024 9:31 am

Hey Everyone,

Keeping this ITR stock. What tires do you recommend? I was going to do Toyo R1R's, but they have disappeared all of the sudden from Toyo.

Thoughts / comments?

I will be using this car as a show car only, but would also like to have fun with it when I'm driving it.

I went with the Falken Azenis RT615's on mine and they, in my opinion, are gonna be very hard to beat, esp at their price point. Grip in the rain is damn near as good as the dry grip. I have about 3000 miles on mine and they are showing very little wear. I don't have any track experience with them, but they are awesome while on The Tail of the Dragon.

Assuming you went with the 205/50/R15's?

Can second this. Have same tire on my '97 resto and they are a great tire for me thus far. VERY good grip.

Yes. I think at the time I only paid maybe $125 each, give or take a few. Just pulled the car out of storage and I forgot just how damn good they grip.

20 years ago, the Falken Azenis RT-215 were one of the closest street tires that could act like an r-comp on track for a lap or two before overheating. They also had super stiff sidewalls, which were a little harsh around town. I have fond memories of using those, including over-driving them to the point where they turned blue and started losing large chunks of tread. I was still learning to not push too hard when the tires weren't there.

With that said, they have definitely evolved. I ordered the new RT-615K+ in July and really like them. The road noise has greatly decreased, the grip is excellent, and they were fine the rain. I think the sidewalls might be a little softer than the old RT-215 (we did have the 615 and 615+ generations between), and that might help with noise, ride quality, etc.

I have Toyo R1Rs as well. They're good tires too, especially in the rain, and can handle a track day. They won't have as much as grip in the dry as the modern tire options though.

These were all in 205/50/15 on 15x7 wheels.

Continental Extreme Contact Sport 02. if they aren't discontinued like I heard they are. But if you can get them they are a solid choice for street driving including being the rain tire for track days. I've been running the first gen in 205/50/15 on my Integra and Civic and they're great. But if they are discontinued like I heard they might be its there is going to be a huge gap between a 200tw tire and any other tire below the conti. IMO that was the best middle ground tire for 15in

I agree with many comments above. The first step in shopping for tires are to make sure one is comparing apples to apples, ie tires from the same tire category. One's desired use drives which categories are better.

It's been years since I did the annual tire thread. If this is beneficial to you, it could be worth collaborating together on.
